A Guide to Culture and Symbols

 

Native American Headdress

Native American headdresses are not just decorative accessories; they are powerful symbols of honor, bravery, and leadership. The most iconic type, the "war bonnet," is primarily worn by tribes from the Great Plains, such as the Sioux, Cheyenne, and Crow. It is only given to respected warriors or leaders who have made significant contributions to the community. Each feather in the headdress carries a sacred meaning, representing an act of valor or a moment of protecting the tribe.

The war bonnet is more than a symbol of respect; it’s part of a rigorous ceremonial process. A warrior must perform a courageous act, recount their deeds in front of the tribal council, and undergo purification rituals to earn the right to wear the headdress. Every feather, especially eagle feathers, holds deep spiritual significance, as eagles are believed to be messengers carrying prayers to the Creator.

Each component of the headdress, from the feathers, headband, to leather straps, reflects reverence and loyalty to ancestors, embodying strength, power, and the profound cultural values of Native American tribes.

 

Native American Face Paint

For Native Americans, face paint is not merely decorative; it holds deep spiritual significance. Each design represents the wearer's courage, spiritual strength, and connection to their tribe. Face paint is used to activate a warrior’s "medicine" - their spiritual power - providing protection from evil spirits or enemies. These designs are often born from personal dreams or visions, interpreted by a medicine man or elder.

The colors used in face paint carry powerful meanings that are consistent across many tribes. Red symbolizes strength, energy, and courage in battle. Black represents victory and life’s challenges, while white signifies peace, mourning, or a fresh start. Green represents resilience and healing, often painted beneath the eyes to enhance vision, and yellow honors a full life and readiness to fight to the end.

Face paint is typically applied before battle or important ceremonies, marking a spiritual preparation for the warrior. It can also be used during rituals or after completing significant acts of bravery. The painting process is sacred, with each color and design reflecting the deep bond with nature and the spiritual world.

 

Totem Pole

Totem poles are more than just artistic creations; they are powerful symbols of identity, history, and spiritual connection in Native American cultures, particularly in the Pacific Northwest. Carved with intricate designs representing clan crests and legendary creatures like the Thunderbird, Killer Whale, Bear, and Raven, totem poles tell the story of a family’s lineage, achievements, and their deep ties to nature. Each design is a visual narrative, passed down through generations, signifying the tribe’s history and cultural values.

Totem poles also serve as markers of social status and power, much like the way Potlatch ceremonies were used to display wealth and generosity. The figures carved into these poles represent both ancestral spirits and the enduring strength of the community. The Thunderbird symbolizes protection and leadership, while the Raven embodies creation and knowledge. Each creature carved into the pole holds a sacred meaning, linking the physical and spiritual worlds.

These monumental works of art are not only for decoration—they are living records of a tribe’s history, their connection to the land, and their respect for ancestors. Totem poles stand tall as reminders of who we are, where we come from, and the values we continue to honor and uphold.

 

Native American Symbols & Descriptions

Native American symbols carry deep spiritual significance, connecting individuals to the land, ancestors, and their beliefs. Each symbol, whether it's the bear representing strength or the thunderbird symbolizing power and protection, speaks to core values within their traditions. These symbols go beyond artistic expression; they are a visual language used to communicate stories, identity, and the spirit of the tribe.

For instance, the bear paw represents good fortune and leadership, while the thunderbird embodies the strength of the heavens. The zigzag of lightning signifies power and speed, often linked to the sacred thunderbird, while handprints signify bravery and success in hand-to-hand combat. Symbols of rain and clouds represent change and renewal—essential forces for life.

Face paint and body markings, derived from these symbols, served many purposes. They offered spiritual protection, helped warriors prepare for battle, and marked important milestones in a person’s life. These marks were not just for decoration but held deep meaning, transforming a warrior's body into a sacred canvas, embodying their strength, courage, and connection to the natural and spiritual world.

This remarkable piece of illustrated cartography was designed by Michael Mcardle-Nakoma and published in 1996. According to the author’s text below the title, “This map gives a Native American perspective by placing the tribes when they were in full flower – the ‘Glory Days’.”

Similarly, your Decal and Handmade items will be dispatched together from the same production location.

However, it's important to note that if you make a purchase of products from different categories (e.g., a T-shirt and a Decal), they will be shipped separately, resulting in two shipments. Each shipment will include the relevant tracking information to keep you informed about their progress.
We understand that receiving separate packages at different times may be unexpected, and we apologize for any inconvenience this might cause.

RISK FREE SHIPPING

If for whatever reason your goods don't arrive within 60 days, you will be refunded in FULL for that item. This is our promise to you! If there's a missing order, please let us know via support@welcomenativespirt.com. We'll investigate (it usually took 3-5 business days) and send you another one after we got a conclusion.

Since each item is custom made for every customer, Welcomenativespirit does not offer returns/exchanges for preference-based reasons. That said, your satisfaction is our priority. If your item is defective or you received an incorrect order, please email support@welcomenativespirit.com with your order number and photos showing the issue, and we’ll review and arrange a replacement as quickly as possible.

Replacement timeline: same as a standard order, including 2 business days for processing and 2–5 days for shipping. There is no replacement/reshipment fee in the cases above.

Refunds: will be processed as soon as your request is verified. Funds typically return to your original payment method within 3–5 business days, depending on your bank.

To protect every customer’s interests and keep the process clear and fair, we’re unable to offer refunds or replacements in the following situations (as they are outside of our control or are not caused by our error):

  • Customer selected the wrong size: Please review the size chart carefully before ordering. If you need sizing help, we’re happy to assist before purchase.
  • Package is missing/undeliverable due to an incorrect shipping address provided by the customer: Please double-check your address details (especially street number and ZIP code) to avoid delivery issues.
  • Customer does not like the material/feel of the item: We do our best to provide accurate product descriptions, but personal preference can vary, so this is not eligible for refunds/replacements.
  • Order or address changes requested after the item has been printed and handed to the carrier: Once production and shipping are in motion, we’re unable to make changes, and we cannot offer refunds/replacements for change requests.
  • Item returned without contacting us first: To avoid lost packages and ensure proper handling, please contact us before sending anything back. Unannounced returns will not be processed.

1) ORDER EDITS OR CANCELLATION

To protect your interests and minimize errors during production, you may request an order change or cancellation within 5 hours of placing your order.
After this time, or once your order has moved into production, the system can no longer modify the order details.

 

2) DAMAGED ITEM / POOR PRINT QUALITY / WRONG ITEM RECEIVED

At Welcomenativespirit Store, we work hard to maintain quality control and ensure accurate packing. However, if you unfortunately receive an item that is:

  • Damaged
  • Printed with poor quality
  • Or different from what you ordered

we will prioritize resolving the issue to protect your rights as a customer.

For the fastest and most accurate support, please email support@welcomenativespirit.com with:

  • Your order number
  • Clear photos or a video showing the issue (the damaged area / incorrect details)
  • A photo of the QR code label on the package you received

After review, our support team will arrange a replacement reprint or a refund, depending on what best fits your case.

3) ORDER NOT RECEIVED

If your order has not been delivered within 20 days (US orders) or 30 days (international orders) from the order date (not including 1–5 business days for processing), please contact us.
We will investigate with the shipping carrier and provide a full refund if the shipment is confirmed to have an issue.

Note: This policy does not apply if the customer provided an incorrect address or missed the delivery, causing the shipment to fail.

 

4) PACKAGE LOST / RETURNED DUE TO AN INCORRECT ADDRESS PROVIDED BY THE CUSTOMER

To avoid delivery issues, please double-check your shipping address carefully (especially your street number, street name, and ZIP code) before placing your order.

  • If a package is lost due to an incorrect address provided by the customer, we cannot offer a free refund or free reshipment, as this situation is outside of our control. However, we will still assist you in contacting the carrier, and we may offer to reship a new order with a supported/discounted reshipment fee, depending on the case.
  • If tracking shows the package was returned to the sender (incorrect address, failed delivery because no one was available, or the package was not picked up in time), we may consider sending a replacement, but refunds are not available in this situation.
